Book Review: Printed Sections of Zaad al-Ma’aad

In my post covering the Mukhtasar of Zaad al-Ma’aad, I mentioned the booklets that are printed and distributed by the Da’wah centers in the Kingdom. Most of the booklets go for one or two Saudi Riyals but most of the time they are given away for free at the study circles and conferences given by the Permanent Committee and their students. For more background about this book please see the post I mentioned above.

As for this particular print then it is a compilation of the Mukhtasar highlighting beneficial areas of the Prophet’s (peace be upon him) manners, actions, prohibitions, etc. condensed into a small lightweight book. I plan to translate some sections for the Qawl Sadeed blog as the sections are short but very enlightening.

Book Review: Fadhl Ahli-Bayt wa ‘Uloowi Makaanatihim

With the recent attack of the Shee’ah on Ahlu-Sunnah in Dammaaj, Yemen, I decided to contribute in my own personal intellectual Jihaad against this sect of Islam and provide sound and authentic information on literary works written by the scholars clarifying their creed and deviant beliefs. I had purchased an excellent treatise by the Muhaddith of Madeenah, ash-Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbaad entitled Fadhl Ahli-Bayt wa ‘Uloowi Makaanatihim ‘inda Ahlis-Sunnati-wal-Jamaa’ah, printed by Daar Ibn al-Atheer in Riyadh.

This 87 page treatise is divided into ten sections covering the correct Islamic meaning regarding Ahl-Bayt (literally the Family of the House, meaning the Prophetic household). Here is a quick translation of those sections:

Section Two: A Brief Summary of the Creed of the People of the Sunnah and Muslims concerning Ahlu-Bayt

This excellent work of the Shaykh reminds me of a shorter version of the exhaustive and excellent book as-Saheeh-ul-Musnad min Fadhaaili Ahli Bayt-in-Nubuwwah (The Authentic Narrations regarding the Noble Traits of the Family of the Prophetic Household) Written by Umm Shua’yb al-Waad’iyyah (hafithahaallah) the wife of the late Muhaddith of Yemen, ash-Shaykh Muqbil bin Haadee (rahimahullah). With that said here are several more links to books in Arabic that cover in detail the deviant creed and beliefs of the Shee’ah.

There are some Muslims today who cast doubts regarding the legitimacy of the Saudi government and attack its rulers and its scholars. This particular book focuses on18 doubts along with knowledge-based responses to each claim. The responses are taken from the works of the late Mufti ‘Abdul-‘Azeez bin Baaz and the late scholar of the Qaseem region and member of the Committee of Major Scholars, Muhammad bin Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen, may Allah have mercy upon them both.

The title of the book is taken from the Quranic verse, {And debate with them in a manner which is best.} The author Bandar bin Nayf al-‘Utaybee brings a beneficial introduction concerning the issue of Takfeer (declaring a Muslim a disbeliever) and overthrowing the Muslim ruler.

I was enlightened by the responses to many of the doubts that are commonly heard amongst ignorant Muslims throughout the Muslims and non-Muslim world. For example, light is shed concerning the issue surrounding the residency of non-Muslims in the Arabian Peninsula. Many Jihadis and Takfeeris use the religion as a basis to carry out violent attacks against non-Muslims and Muslims alike. The author brings the statements of the two aforementioned scholars derived from the Quran and the Ahadeeth that prove the illegitimacy of their allegations and the corruption and evil of their actions.

The book has written recommendations from ash-Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin bin Naasir Aali ‘Ubaykaan, member of the Consultation Committee for the Ministry of Justice, and ash-Shaykh Muhammad bin Hasan bin ‘Abdur-Rahmaan Aali ash-Shaykh, member of the Permanent Committee and Committee of Major Scholars.

This is a small compilation concerning the origin, creed, methodology, and personalities of the Jamaa’at-ut-Tableegh. The book is praised by ash-Shaykh al-‘Allaamah Muhammad bin Muslim Aali ‘Uthaymeen who writes a recommendation. The author also includes rulings from members of the Major Scholars in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia concerning this group. I translated several sections of this book years ago in which the translated sections appeared on the site Salafyink, so whoever wants can refer to those translated sections.

This is another excellent treatise containing the rulings of many scholars concerning the errors and beliefs of the Tableegh. Scholars such as the late Muftis of Saudi Arabia, ash-Shaykh Muhammad bin Ibraaheem Aali ash-Shaykh and ash-Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez bin Baaz, members of the Committee of Major Scholars in Saudi Arabia such as ash-Shaykh Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen, ash-Shaykh ‘Abdur-Razaaq al-‘Afeefee, Dr. Saalih bin ‘Abdur-Rahmaan al-Atram, Dr. Saalih al-Fawzaan, the Muhaddith of ash-Shaam ash-Shaykh Muhammad Naasir-ud-Deen al-Albaanee, some of the Mashaayikh of Riyadh like ash-Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez ar-Raajihee (who I have been blessed to meet at Jaami' Raajihi when he gave a Dars there) and ash-Shaykh Hamood at-Tuwayjiree, the Muhaddith of Yemen ash-Shaykh Muqbil bin Haadee al-Waadi’ee, and many many others.

There is a foreword by our Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan recommending the book. The author has gone to lengths to write very little and instead present the knowledge-based rulings of the Scholars concerning the Tableegh.

The Muhaddith of Madinah, ash-Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin al-‘Abbaad, may Allah protect him from every evil and harm, explains Ibn Abee Zayd’s classical text on ‘Aqeedah. The text itself is part of a bigger work of Aboo ‘Abdullah Aboo Muhammad bin Abee Zayd from al-Qayrawaan(died in 386 A.H.) entitled ar-Risaalah al-Fiqihiyyah. Ibn Zayd was the Imam of the Maalakiyyah of his time and known as Maalik Sagheer (the little Imam Maalik).

Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin gives an introduction, a short biography of the author, and then ten points concerning the creed of the four Imams and answers some doubts of the ‘Ashaairah and other deviant sects. Interestingly, a lot of what we hear Hamza Yusuf, Zaid Shaakir, and Suhaib Webb propagating in the name of the ‘Asharees there in the West is dismantled in the Shaykh’s knowledge-based points. Then after this the Shaykh includes ash-Shaykh Ahmad bin Musharraf al-Ahsaa’ee al-Maalikee’s (died in 1285 A.H.) poem form of the text. The full text is also included as reference.

The Shaykh’s explanation is conveyed in simple Arabic and could be benefited by student of knowledge or layperson. May Allah reward the Shaykh for clarifying the creed of the Salaf. The printing ends with a detailed index of the entire book.

While the font is nice and the layout is good the quality of the book is poor. The inside of the binding is falling apart and the book was cut crooked. When I purchased it, I sifted through a stack of them and found all of them to be of poor quality, I actually picked the best looking one. I bought it new from Daar-ut-Tadmurriyyah here in Riyadh.

This is an excellent question and answer format of Ibn Taymiyyah’s al-‘Aqeedah al-Waasitiyyah. The author Dr. Khaalid Naasir bin Sa’eed Aali Husayn is a member of the Teaching Organization in the Islamic University of Muhammad bin Sa’ood in the Department of Usool-ud-Deen in Riyadh. He has compiled the text into 88 questions and answers. The style of Arabic is simple and the printing is of high quality.

Each section of the text is highlighted in black bold font, and the questions are in red. There is an index of the questions at the end of the book and a second index of the topics.

If you like biographies of the scholars, then without a doubt you will enjoy this work. The former head of the Sunnah department of the Islamic University of Madeenah, Dr. Rabee’ bin Haadee al-Madkhalee, put together a short yet beneficial biography of over 111 scholars beginning with Ibn al-Mundhir who died in 318 A.H. to Muqbil ibn Haadee al-Waadi’ee who died in 1422 A.H.

Dr. Rabee’ gives an insightful introduction covering the knowledge of the Ahlul-Hadeeth (the People of the Prophetic narrations) and their importance. The book contains an index as well as an index of all the Ahaadeeth that appear in the text.

Book Review: Majmoo’at-ut-Tawheed

Knowledge-based from beginning to end, this is the well-known Majmoo’at-ut-Tawheed an-Najdiyyah, a compilation of treatises focusing on Tawheed. The majority are written by Shaykh-ul-Islaam Muhammad ibn ‘Abdil-Wahhaab, may Allah have mercy upon him, but there are also others written by the Shaykh’s grandsons as well as other scholars of an-Najd.

All of the short treatises are included such as Kitaab-ut-Tawheed, Kashf-ush-Shubuhaat, Tafseer Kalimat-it-Tawheed, Thalaath Masaail, Fee Talqeen Usool al-‘Aqeedah lil-‘Awaam, and other treatises of the Shaykh on prayer, Tafseer, and Manhaj.

This collection is a popular print that can be found at many used bookstores in Riyadh and I have even see it in some of the retail bookstores such as al-‘Ubaykaan and Jareer. It was first printed by King ‘Abdul-‘Azeez and then printed again by order of King Fahd, may Allah have mercy on them both.

This printing is hard back and has 636 pages. It is of high quality and only cost me 15 Riyals. I do not see the name of any printer or company responsible for its printing.

Shaykh-ul-Islaam, Ibn Taymiyyah (661 – 728 A.H.), may Allah have mercy upon him, wrote a short and knowledge-based response to those who hold that prayer behind one who follows the Fiqh opinions of Imam Maalik is not valid and that whoever prays behind one, his prayer is incorrect. The foreword is written by Dr. Muhammad ‘Ali Firkoos, Professor of the college of Islamic Sciences in the University of Algeria. The Verifier and Commentator Shaykh ‘Abdur-Rahmaan ‘Abdul-Majeed Jumu’ah al-Jazaairee, gives an enlightening introduction, proof that the text was written by Ibn Taymiyyah, and provides manuscript copies of the text. His verification and notes are extremely detailed and sound against those who hold this strange view.

Book Review: The Kabaair Texts

It is very important for Muslims and non-Muslims alike to understand the Islamic concept of sin and their levels. The early and later scholars wrote many books on sin and focused on explaining them to the Muslims so that they may avoid them or repent from them.

The following is my review of two well-known texts that focus on al-Kabaair or the Major Sins of Islam.

Kitaab-ul-Kabaair written by al-Haafith Abee ‘Abdillah Muhammad bin Ahmad bin ‘Uthmaan adh-Dhahabee

This work has been published by many book publishers and can easily be found online and available in PDF form. I literally had to sift through several printings at the used bookstore so I won’t go into the copy I have just some basic info on the text. This text was written by al-Haafith adh-Dhahabee who was born in 674 A.H. and died in 738 A.H. Imam adh-Dhahabee lists 76 major sins in Islam with evidences from the Quran, the statements of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and some statements of the companions and people of knowledge. This printing as most of the others I noticed contain verifications, introductions, footnotes, copies of the original manuscripts, and indexes.

The second work is from Shaykh-ul-Islam Muhammad bin ‘Abdul-Wahhaab entitled al-Kabaair. My copy was printed for free distribution by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs in hardback form. The Shaykh lists 125 major sins. He titles the section and gives the proof from the Quran and the narrations of the Prophet, peace be upon him. This copy was verified and checked by Dr. Baasim Faysal al-Jawaabirah, professor of Hadeeth and Usool-ud-Deen in Riyadh. A concise biography of the Shaykh is given along with a detailed index of the subject matter.

The other Kabaair text that I know of is Ibn Hajar al-Haythamee’s al-Kabaair, but I do not have a copy of it in published form. Nuh Hah Meem Keller included it in his translation of Reliance of the Traveler where he translated it and paired it side-by-side with the Arabic text, so whoever wants to refer to it can do so.

The Sunan of ad-Daarimee is considered one of the nine books of Hadeeth collections of the statements and actions of the Prophet, peace be upon him. It is also known as Musnad ad-Daarimee written by Aboo Muhammad ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abdir-Rahmaan bin al-Fadhl bin Bahraam bin ‘Abdus-Samad at-Tameemee ad-Daarimee born in the year 181 A.H. and died in Samarqand (in modern day Uzbekistan) in the year 255 A.H. He was 74 years old.

Many scholars of Haadeeth have narrated from him such as al-Bukhaaree in other writings than his Saheeh, Aboo Daawud, ar-Tirmidhee, an-Nisaa’ee, Imam Ahmad, and others. Imam Muslim collected 73 narrations from him in his Saheeh.

Imam ad-Daarimee divided his Sunan into 23 sections known as Kitaab, and then added topics concerning the section. His introduction to the Sunan contains very important statements of the Salaf concerning seeking knowledge.

This printing is of good quality and contains an introduction by the verifier, a short biography, copies of the manuscripts used, and a detailed index. The only problem I have with this printing is that there are no vowel signs on the narrations. There is another printing of the Sunan by Daar-ul-Mughnee in Riyadh with a verification by Husayn Saleem Asad ad-Daaraanee, where the narrations are fully voweled. I have it in PDF format but have not been able to find it in the used bookstores here in Riyadh.

This is a hardcover book containing all of the sermons given by the current Mufti of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the day of ‘Arafah during Hajj. It covers each sermon he gave from 1402 to 1411 A.H. Every quranic verse and prophetic narration is verified and its source listed with additional notes of benefit from the verifier Baadr bin Muhammad al-Wuhaybee. This book is given out free by the Kingdom, but from time to time people sell these books to the used store outlets where they in turn are sold, as is the case with my copy which I purchased for 11 Saudi Riyals. The book is very nice and of high quality, in addition to side notes of each sermon that appear on the sides for easy reference.

The Mufti, may Allah bless him and reward him, wrote a very beneficial introduction in which he explains the importance of the sermon of ‘Arafah and how the Prophet, peace be upon him addressed his companions, may Allah be pleased with them. He also points out that the Prophet, peace be upon him, is the leader of those who give the 'Arafah sermons, and his Sunnah will always be emulated in preaching to the pilgrims during Hajj.

This is a paperback booklet that summarizes points of benefit from Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan’s bigger book entitled Kittab-ut-Tawheed. The book is divided into four Baab: Tawheed is the basis of the Religion, al-Walaa wal-Baraa, Concerning what is obligatory to adhere to concerning the Messenger, peace be upon him, his household, his companions, and the rulers, and what negates at-Tawheed. Each Baab is then divided into sections that outline each topic.

This is a compilation of 150 small narrations that are found in al-Bukhaaree and Muslim. It was compiled and arranged by a student of Daar-ul-Hadeeth in Dammaaj, Yemen. There is a foreword by ash-Shaykh Yahyaa al-Hajooree with his verification. Each narration is short and easy to memorize. Most of these narrations cover the issues of Imaan, manners, abstinence of the worldly affairs, etc. Without a doubt this is a very beneficial book to have for Hadeeth memorization.

Book Review: Texts used for Shaykh Fawzaan’s class on Tawheed

In the last two posts, we covered the texts that Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan teaches on Saturday and Sunday. On Mondays the Shaykh teaches Tafseer. He doesn’t use any specific text, he just teaches from memory. Tuesday is the Shaykh’s last class and focuses on Tawheed.

Since I have been here, the Shaykh has taught the following three treatises on Tawheed:

One: Tajreed at-Tawheed al-Mufeed by al-Imam al-‘Allaamah Ahmad bin ‘Alee al-Maqreezee (766-845 A.H.) published by Daar ‘Aalam al-Fawaaid consisting of 112 pages. The copy I have has an introduction, a biography, and brief outline of the treatise in addition to a copy of the original manuscript. The text has been verified by ‘Alee bin Muhammad al-‘Imraan using several old manuscripts.

This beneficial treatise focuses on the inner teachings of Tawheed ar-Ruboobiyyah and al-Uloohiyyah. I have come across an excellent translation of it here.

Two: Tatheer-ul-I’tiqaad ‘an Adraan al-Ilhaad, written by al-Imam, Muhammad bin Ismaa’eel as-San’aanee (D. 1182 A.H.), printed by Daar-ut-Tawheed, consisting of 48 pages. This short text covers 5 important principles regarding at-Tawheed, then refutes the claims of the grave worshipers in a question and answer style that Imam as-San’aanee is well known for.

I translated the introduction and 5 principles years ago, but I never completed it. Maybe someone else has done it.

Three: ad-Durrur an-Nadheed fee Ikhlaas Kalimat-it-Tawheed, by al-Imam Muhammad bin ‘Alee ash-Shawkaanee, printed by Daar Ibn Khuzaymah, consisting of 139 pages. The Shaykh just started this text which is another series refuting the grave worshipers and explaining the issues of at-Tawwasul and ash-Shafaa’ah. The Shaykh has given three classes so far and stopped a couple of weeks ago for the summer vacation.

The Shaykh teaches the text and then moves on to the next one after he finishes it. This is one of my favorite classes and made me realize the immense importance of studying and learning Tawheed in a time when many Muslims and non-Muslims alike are distancing themselves from the Creator and faith.

In our last post, we covered the text that Shaykh Fawzaan teaches on Saturday. We will now move on to the next class.

On Sunday, Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan teaches from Mukhtasar Zaad al-Ma’aad. This is an abridged version done by Shaykh-ul-Islam, Muhammad bin ‘Abdul-Wahhaab, may Allah have mercy upon him. He condensed Shaykh-ul-Islam, Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah’s, may Allah have mercy upon him, Zaad-ul-Ma’aad which usually is printed in 4 volumes. My wife had a print of it by Daar-ul-Athaar in Sanaa, Yemen in 2 volumes which she bought from the Salafi bookstore in ‘Ayn Shams, Cairo. The type was kind of small though.

The Shaykh’s Sunday class is a mixture of Seerah and Fiqh. We cover the biography of the Prophet, peace be upon him, while learning the Fiqh aspect of how he applied Islam in his life. The brother who reads on the Shaykh recites the text sort of like in a rhyming poetic form and then the Shaykh will stop him where he wants him to stop and explains the text. The Shaykh always covers the Fiqh aspect of the text and then explains words or difficult vocabulary. He always brings verses of the Quran, statements of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and the statements of the scholars when he speaks. When we covered the Fiqh aspects of the ‘Aqeeqah, I learned from the Shaykh that it is not necessary to shave the girl’s head but it is for a boy.

In regards to the book, then many publishers have printed it, so finding the print should not be difficult. When I went to the used bookstore to get my copy there were over five different printings. My wife has a different copy than mine, and all of the students in class have different printings as well.

The Mukhtasar has been translated into English under the name ‘Abridged Biography of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)’. You can read more about it here. Zaad-ul-Ma’aad itself has been translated into English by Shaykh Jalal Abul-Rub, but I do not know where to find it online. Maybe someone can find out and comment here, Allah willing.

In these upcoming posts, I will focus on the texts that are taught by our Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan within his general study circles given Saturday through Tuesday. These lessons are all taught at Masjid al-Ameer Mu’tib bin ‘Abdil-‘Azeez in the Milaaz district of Riyadh. The Shaykh gives these four lessons and the Friday sermon, but he is not the Imam. The Imam here, Shaykh Naasir reads two texts on the Shaykh which is on Saturday and Tuesday. Another brother reads the text on the Shaykh on Sunday. Three of these lessons are read from texts of the Scholars while the Shaykh’s Tafseer class is done from the Shaykh’s memory based on his Tafseer studies as a youth. Saturday is the first day of the week in Saudi and it is the first day that the Shaykh begins his general lessons from after al-Maghrib until al-‘Ishaa. This class is over the classical Hanbali text al-Muntaqaa min Akhbaar al-Mustafaa written by al-Imam Aboo Barakaat Majd-ud-Deen, may Allah have mercy upon him, who was the grandfather of the famous scholar Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah enlighten his grave.

The print that I have purchased and which is the most popular print is the four volume version printed by Mua’ssasah ar-Risaalah. I have seen other students with different printings but I am not familiar with who printed them and their volumes. This book is arranged by the main topics of Fiqh such as purification, prayer, fasting, charity, pilgrimage, etc. and presents the title of the subject and then the narration concerning the subject. Volume four contains a nicely arranged index of the topics and narrations.

The following image is an example of my notes taken during the Shaykh’s class. He usually covers 5 to 6 narrations and after each one is read to him, he goes on to explain the meaning of the narration and the vocabulary found in the text along with any Fiqh related aspects associated with the topic.

This particular print is a good printing with the exception of one section in which the Shaykh said is not found in the original text of the Muntaqaa. The quality is good and the pages are wide enough for decent dictation of the Shaykh’s explanations.

This is a very extensive compilation concerning the beneficial characteristics of the people of Yemen, compiled and arranged by one of the students of Daar-ul-Hadeeth in Dammaaj, may Allah protect it and have mercy upon its founder. This printing actually contains two books in one, both by the same author. The second book after this is entitled al-Ahaadeeth adh-Dha’eefah fee Fadhaail Ahli-Yaman, which is a collection of one hundred weak narrations concerning Yemen and its people.

The foreword is written by ash-Shaykh Yahyaa, the current rector of Daar-ul-Hadeeth, who is entrusted with reviewing all of the works put out by the students before they are ready for print.

The topics within this work are beautifully laid out and begin with an introduction, why Yemen is called Yemen, and then goes into the narrations concerning this blessed land. Other interesting topics include the statements of the people of knowledge concerning the people of Yemen, the names of some of the companions who were from Yemen, which numbers fifty seven companions, as well as the names of the most famous scholars of Yemen which numbers ninety two scholars, etc.

This is a compilation of thirty narrations, both authentic, weak, and fabricated, concerning the beneficial characteristics of Syria and Damascus. The Shaykh, may Allah have mercy upon him, collected these narrations from al-Haafith Aboo al-Hasan ar-Rabi’ee’s (Died 444 A.H.) work and included the source of each narration, its grade of authenticity, and added notes to the narrations. Each narration includes the name of the companion but not the full chain of narrators.

The compilation sheds light on the blessings contained within Syria and Damascus in a time when it is filled with many trials and the Muslims are being persecuted and afflicted by secularism. We ask Allah to bless Syria and Damascus and to return it to the place of knowledge and application of Islam that it once was.

Al-Imaam, al-Haafith, ‘Abdul-Ghanee bin ‘Abdul-Waahid bin ‘Alee bin Suroor al-Maqdisee (531-600 A.H.), may Allah have mercy upon him, compiled a collection of narrations along with their full chain of narrators concerning Tawheed. The text is divided into twenty-four topics on Tawheed and each narration is verified along with notes concerning finer points of the narration, by Muhamad ‘Abdur-Rahmaan an-Naablusee and ‘Abdul-Akram as-Saqaa. They both give an insightful introduction, a brief biography of the author, several copies of some of the pages from the original manuscript, and a detailed index of all of the narrations and subjects in the text for easy reference.

I bought this at a used bookstore here in Riyadh for a couple of Riyals hidden in a stack of dusty used books. I didn’t realize what a gem I had stumbled upon. I am not sure if this was ever reprinted but my copy was done in 1995.

I received this book as a gift from my neighbor Aboo Ibraaheem, may Allah reward him with good. This is a small compilation of letters from the Saudi kings beginning with the first, Imam Muhammad bin Sa’ood all the way to Fahd bin ‘Abdul-‘Azeez. The letters are written to their people on many topics such as the importance of Islam and Tawheed, observing prayer, the call of as-Salafiyyah, etc.

The book introduces a detailed explanation of the condition of the Arabian Peninsula before the call of Shaykh Muhammad bin ‘Abdil-Wahhaab and then goes into a brief biography of his life. Included is a chart showing all of the rulers in Arabia from the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, until the present time. There is also a brief biography of each Saudi king concerning their place of birth, educational background, religious studies, and contributions to Islam.

This compilation exposes us to the religious side of these kings and towards their great concern for establishing Islam in the Arabian Peninsula in addition to their concern in spreading the true message of our religion to the Muslims and non-Muslims alike.

This is a collection of memorable sound bites taken from the lectures of Shaykh Muqbil bin Haadee al-Waadi’ee, may Allah have mercy upon him. The late Muhaddith scholar of Yemen and founder of Daar-ul-Hadeeth in the village of Dammaaj, which is 30 minutes away from the north-Yemeni city of Sa’dah.

The book is divided into 26 sections of various topics such as his statements concerning seeking knowledge, recommended books to have for seeking knowledge, his comments about the deviant sects such as the Shiah, the Tableegh, the Ikhwan Muslimeen, his comments on America, and his warnings from disobedience and following the Quran and Sunnah.

I will translate some beneficial statements from the Shaykh so that you may get an idea of what the book is about. Under the section, “His advices and words of guidance towards his students”:

“Learning Tawheed is from the best ways of drawing closer to Allah.”

“The person who becomes beneficial in mastering the science of an-Nahw can cause benefit in all of the other sciences.”

“Do you learn so that the people will one day surround you? May Allah never cause blessing of knowledge for this reason.”

“Do you learn so that you can be a caller to a specific group? May Allah never cause blessing of knowledge for this reason. May Allah never cause blessing in any act until it becomes a sincere act (for Allah).”

“I advise the student of knowledge to marry the Sunni woman so that you can both build a Sunni home.”

And just some glimpses from the section, “His speech on some of the groups and sects”:

“I do not defend the rulers but I detest those who inspire take overs and revolutions.”

“The Hizbiyoon are more harmful on the Da’wah than the Sufis and the Shia because the ideology of at-Tasawwuf and at-Tashayyu’ has died.”

“Some of the women of Ahlus-Sunnah are more knowledgeable than many of the Azharis when it comes to the science of Hadeeth.”

“The group Jamaa’at-ul-Jihaad (the Party of Jihaad) deserved to be called Jamaa’at-ul-Fasaad (the Group of Corruption).”

And there are many other more too numerous to translate and post here. But the point being that this is a must have book for the Muslim to read and have as reference. May Allah have mercy upon the Shaykh, and grant him the highest place in paradise.

For one I knew the author personally when we both lived in Arlington, TX. At that time he had just finished the manuscript for Funerals, Regulations and Exhortations and was reviewing it in a class at Center Street Masjid. It is an excellent work.

This book is about 331 pages and contains an enormous amount of references and information regarding the issue of dreams and dream interpretation based on the Book and the Sunnah. He compiles a wealth of quotes and statements of the people of knowledge. This is a great reference book that may take a moment to ingest but is well worth the time.

Book Review: My First Ramadan Children’s Book

Yesterday, my daughter rushed home from school to show me a book that she had checked out. She was excited to find more and more books about Islam and Muslims. She showed me My First Ramadan written by Karen Katz. It is a 28 page book with a nice story about a Muslim boy’s first Ramadan fast. The pages are beautifully illustrated and colorful. There were some things in there that were suspect such as describing the mosque, “The mosque looks beautiful standing tall against the starry night. It is like magic.” “But daddy, I thought magic is Haraam (prohibited) for Muslims to practice.” I had to explain to my daughter, may Allah bless her and her brothers and sisters, that the author was merely trying to use a colorful word to describe the intense beauty of the Masjid and that she didn’t mean actual magic that is forbidden for any Muslim boy or girl to practice. “Someone should tell her that magic is Haraam for us” is all my daughter could say. Overall it is a nice book that I found online available for sale cheaper than the retail price. You can even take a look inside at Amazon.com.

The Sheikh gives commentary on Sheikh-ul-Islâm Ibn Taymiyyah’s book with page references for the reader to evaluate the positions on this matter.

This book also clears up false allegations that have been flung at Sheikh Al-Albaani concerning his opinion in regards to the veiling obligation or not veiling of the Muslim woman which you may have heard of from the general layman such as “Veiling is a difference of an opinion and Sheikh Al-Albaani says that you do not have to veil, but in the same breath you would hear them say his wife and daughters veil.” What type of counter balancing is this?

The Sheikh clearly explains his position in this matter adamantly with his evidence, as well as the opinion of others to show their contradictions when needed. Whether, it be a particular Madhhab i.e., school of thought or contemporary counterpart you will find much benefit from this work on this subject matter which you may not find in any English or Arabic books for that matter which covers this topic in such great detail.

There are over 39 topics pertaining to Da’wah that were collected from the Shaykh’s colossal Majmoo’-ul-Fataawaa, 2nd Edition printed by al-Jam’eeyah Tahfeeth-ul-Quraan al-Kareem bil-Washm. This is an old printing as I found it at a book store in Riyadh selling some pretty outdated books. I happened upon this gem and used some of my gas money to get it. I have also begun translating sections of this book and posting it on my Qawl Sadeed blog. I will not stop until the whole booklet is fully translated with the permission of Allah. This is an excellent explanation of Aboo Bakr al-Haafith ‘Abdullah bin az-Zubayr bin ‘Eeesaa al-Qurashee al-Humaydee al-Makkee he was the Muhaddith of Makkah who died in the year 219 A.H. Imaam al-Bukhaaree used to narrate from him in his Saheeh as well as Imaam Muslim, may Allah have mercy upon them both. It was said of him, "al-Humaydee was the Mufti of the People of Makkah and their Muhaddith, he was to the people of al-Hijaaz concerning the Sunnah what Imaam Ahmad bin Hanbal was to the people of al-'Iraaq.”

It is the product of ash-Shaykh ‘Abdullah ‘Abdir-Raheem al-Bukhaaree assistant professor of Hadeeth in the College of Hadeeth in the Islamic University of Madeenah. He explained this text over a span of a month via telephone. After the recording it was transcribed and prepared for print.

This is the first printing and unfortunately it has a lot of typos in the ‘Iraab and a lot of mistakes in the Quranic verses. Other than this deficiency the book is very beneficial and a must have for everyone who seeks knowledge. Included within this explanation is a background of the text a small biography of the author and a bit by bit elucidation of the text. The text itself is presented at the beginning of the book for those who want to memorize it.

Book Review: Shuroot Laa Ilaha Illa Allah

I picked up this little gem when I visited Shaykh Rislaan’s village of Subk Ahad in Manoofiyyah. I used to attend his Friday sermons when I lived in nearby Shibeen al-Kowm. I bought it from the Maktabah that his sons run called Maktabah Daar-ul-Furqaan next to the Masjid where the Shaykh gives his study circles. They have many good books from the Scholars at very good prices. They also print the Shaykh’s books and sell them.

This small treatise is about 45 pages and explains the meaning and conditions of Laa Ilaha Illa Allah along with the ten nullifiers or Nawaaqidh. It contains the same eloquent style that the Shaykh is known for.

I think I may have paid one Egyptian pound for this book. This is an excellent text to use for study circles for both new Muslims and Muslims not familiar with their religion. May Allah reward the Shaykh for this well written treatise.

This is an explanation of the well known Duaa’ book Hisn-il- Muslim authored by Majdy bin Abdil-Wahhaab Ahmad. The book was written by Dr. Sa’eed bin Alee bin Wahf al-Qahtaanee who also writes the introduction and verified the explanation to his book along with adding other benefical notes.

The book is 238 pages and only sells for 8 Saudi Riyals here in the Kingdom. The text of the Duaa’ is placed first and then a brief explanation of the Duaa’ is given.

I also was able to get a larger version of the Hisn which I posted here for reference. You can compare it to the pocket sized booklet that is sold all over the world.

Book Review: Mukhtasar al-‘Uloow

This is an abridged version of al-Haafith Shams-ud-Deen adh-Dhahabee’s Kitaab-ul-‘Arsh verified by ash-Shaykh Muhammad Naasir-ud-Deen al-Albaanee. It was published by al-Maktab al-Islaamee and was the third printing of the text printed in 1993. There is an introduction by both Ustadh Zuhayr ash-Shaawayish and Shaykh al-Albaanee. This book corrects the belief held since the time of the Mu’tazilah regarding the ‘Uloow of Allah above His creation using evidences from the Book and the Sunnah. There is also a section within Shaykh al-Albaanee’s intro that covers three most misunderstood issues concerning Allah the Almighty: at-Tashbeeh (Likening Him to creation), al-Jihaah (His direction), and al-Makaan (His position).

It starts with the statements of the Prophet- peace be upon him- then goes on to the statements of the Companions, then their students, and then those who followed them. One area in particular that caught my eye was the section of the statement of Aboo Haneefah: It was related by us from Aboo Mutee’ al-Hakam bin ‘Abdillah al-Balkhee, author of al-Fiqh al-Akbar who said: I asked Aboo Haneefah about the one who says, ‘I don’t affirm that my Lord is in the heavens or upon the earth.’ He (Aboo Haneefah) said: “He has disbelieved because Allah the Most High has said {ar-Rahmaan (the Most Merciful) established Himself above the throne} and His throne is above the heavens.” I said to him, “He also says that I affirm that He established Himself upon the throne but I don’t know if the throne is in the heavens or upon the earth!” He said: “If he denies that He is upon the heavens then he has disbelieved.”

Shaykh al-Albaanee goes on to mention that in this Athar there are many benefits and from them is the proof that the well known text al-Fiqh al-Akbar was not actually written by Imaam Aboo Haneefah but rather by Aboo Mutee’ who was one of the major students of Aboo Haneefah as he was mentioned in al-Meezaan and it was attributed to Aboo Mutee’ and not Aboo Haneefah as we find the later blind followers of Aboo Haneefah claiming today.

All of the quotes are referenced along with their chains of transmission proving their authenticity and soundness amongst the scholars of Islam.

Book Review: Risaalah fee Ithbaat al-Istiwaa wal-Fawqiyyah

This is a treatise written by al-‘Allaamah Aboo Muhammad ‘Abdullah bin Yusoof al-Juwaynee may Allah have mercy upon him. His Nisbah is attributed to Juwayn which was a large suburb in Neesaaboor. He was the Shaykh of the Shaafi’i scholars of his time. He was praised by many scholars such as Shaykh-ul-Islaam Aboo Uthmaan as-Saaboonee, al-Haafith Ibn Assaakir, Ibn al-Jawzee, and Imaam adh-Dhahabee. The Shaykh died on Dhul-Qa’dah in the year 438 A.H. Others have said he died in 434 A.H. in Neesaaboor.

Shaykh Aboo Saalih al-Mua’dhin said, “Shaykh Aboo Muhammad al-Juwaynee fell terribly ill for 28 days. He advised me to be in charge of washing his body and preparing the funeral so when he died I washed him. When he was being wrapped in his funeral garments I saw his right hand all the way up to his armpit glowing with an immense light without any defect. It was shining as the moon shines. I pondered for a moment and then I said to myself this was due to the blessings of the rulings that he gave.” Wafayaat-ul-A’ayaan 3/47-48 and Tabaqaat-ash-Shaafi’iyyah al-Kubraa 5/75

This is an old printing published by Daar Tareeq in Riyaadh in 1419 A.H. I found it in one of the used bookstores here in Riyaadh.

The treatise is very brief with a verification by Dr. Ahmad Mu’aadh Haqqi who references the sources for the prophetic narrations used as well as explaining some difficult words or expressions. Here al-‘Allaamah al-Juwaynee (rahimahullah) brings the evidences from the Book and the Sunnah to establish the proof for three major issues; the ‘Uloww of Allah, His Fawqiyyah, and His Istiwaa. He goes over each issue in detail and brings evidences against those Shaafi’iyyah in his time who did not affirm these three issues or who explained them in a way that went against the explanation of the Salaf.

Book Reviews: Two Books about Shaykh al-Albaanee

Juhood ash-Shaykh al-Albaanee fee al-Hadeeth Riwayatan wa Diraayatan

This book was written by ‘Abdur-Rahmaan bin Muhammad bin Saalih al-‘Ayzaree who authored this work as the dissertation for his masters at the University of Sanaa’, Yemen. It is a pretty big book at 250 pages not including the index and source references. It was published by Maktabah Rushd.

The author did an excellent job and he includes a very comprehensive biography of the Shaykh. He lists the Shaykh’s works and then goes into detail about how the Shaykh used to grade the various levels of narrations. He also goes into the various rulings that he gave that conflicted with other mainstream rulings regarding women wearing gold and covering the face and other important issues.

This second book is the first that I have seen available in the English language. It is DarusSalam’s compilation of the Shaykh’s life. For 15 Saudi Riyaals its not that bad and was a good read. I have several other biographies of the Shaykh and found the translators referencing them in this work. Some of the English words are not the easiest to understand but for the English speaker it is a must have book. I found the link for the book at their online store which includes a sneak preview of the book.

His Lineage:
He is the Great Scholar, the Muhaddith , the Famous Linguist, the Expert Writer, the Great Poet, the Moroccan Traveler, the Pathfinder, the Salafi Shaikh, Dr. Muhammad Taqiyyu who is known as Muhammad Taqiyyu Ad-Deen, His kunyah is Abu Shakeeb “whereas he named his first child after the name of his friend Ameer Shakeeb Arsalan” Ibn Abdul-Qadir, Ibn Tayyib, Ibn Ahmad, Ibn Abdul Qadir, Ibn Muhammad, Ibn Abdu-An-Nour, Ibn Abdu Al-Qadir, Ibn Hilal, Ibn Muhammad, Ibn Hilal, Ibn Idris, Ibn Ghalib, Ibn Muhammad Al-Makkiy, Ibn Ismael, Ibn Ahmad, Ibn Muhammad, Ibn Abil Qasim, Ibn Ali, Ibn Abdu Al-Qawwiy, Ibn Abdu Al-Rahman, Ibn Idris, Ibn Ismael, Ibn Suleiman, Ibn Musa Al-Kazwim, Ibn Ja'far Al-Sadiq Ibn Al-Baqir, Ibn Ali Zain Al-Abideen, Ibn Al-Hussein Ibn Ali and Fatimah the Daughter of the Prophet Muhammad r Sultan Hassan the first has approved this lineage on his arrival at Sajalmaasah in the year 1311 A.H.

His Upbringing:
The Shaikh was born in the year 1311 A.H. in a village called “Al-Farkh” als known as “Faidatu Al-Qadeemah” some miles away from Riyadh. It is one of the villages of Sajalmasah which is known today as Taafilaalit which is located at the southern part of the kingdom of Morocco he grew up in a knowledgeable and juristic family. His father and grandfather were one of the jurists of that town.

His Journey To Seeking Knowledge and His Service for the Dawah:
He studied the Holy Qur'ân and memorized it from his father when he was twelve, and then he perfected it with its rules of recitation under the Shaikh, the Qur’ân teacher, Ahmad Ibn Saalih and then he sat with Shaikh Muhammad Sayyid Ibn Habeebillah At-Tandaghi Ash-Shinqiti. So he first memorized “Mukhtasar Khalil” he studied Arabic lexicology and the Maaliki Jurisprudence on his hand and perfected it to the point that the Shaikh let him represent him in his absence. After the death of his Shaikh he took his path to seeking knowledge at the hands of the scholars of “Wajdah and Faas” during that time, until he attained a certificate from the university of Al-Qarwayain. Afterwards he traveled to Cairo to study the Sunnah of the Prophet (s).

There he met some scholars like Shaikh Abdu Ad-Dhaahir Abu As-Samh and Shaikh Rasheed Ridaa, Shaikh Muhammad Ar-Ramaali and more, likewise he attended the lectures in the department of high education in Al-Azhar, and he stayed in Egypt for a year calling to the creed of the Salaf and fighting against polytheism and atheism. After performing the pilgrimage, he traveled to India to attain his aspiration which is the knowledge of hadeeth.

However, he met major scholars there, so he had benefited the people and had gained a benefit from the scholars. And from among the major scholars he had met there were, the Muhaddith the Scholar, Shaikh Abdu-Ar-Rahman Ibn Abdu Ar-Raheem Al-Mubarakfuri, the author of “Tuhfatu Al-Ahwazi” and took from him the knowledge of hadeeth and the Shaikh gave him the authorization in teaching it. He extolled the Shaikh with a poem in which he pleaded the students of knowledge to hold fast to the knowledge of hadeeth and try to benefit from the aforementioned explanation “Tuhfatu Al-Ahwazi” this poem is printed in the forth edition of the Indian print.

In addition, he sat with Shaikh Muhammad Ibn Hussein Ibn Muhsin, Al-Hadeedi An-Ansaari, and Al-Yemani, who was dwelling in India during that era. He read on him the “Kutubu As-Sittah” the six books of the tradition of the Prophet r and he also gave him the authorization in teaching them. From India, he traveled to Az-Zubair (Al-Basra) in Iraq where he met the Salafi Mauritanian scholar, the Researcher, Shaikh Muhammad Al-Ameen Al-Shinqiti, the one who established (Al-Najatil Ahliyyah school in Az-Zubair, and he is different from the prominent scholar, the interpreter, the author of “Adwaail Bayan”. He benefited from his knowledge. He stayed in Iraq for almost three years and then traveled to Saudi via Egypt where he received a recommendation letter from Sayyid Muhammad Rashid Rida to King Abdul Aziz Aali Su'ud. He said in that letter, “Verily Muhammad Taqiyyu Ad-Deen Al-Hilali Al-Maghribi is the best scholar ever from the scholars of the horizon who has come to you, therefore I hope that you will benefit from his knowledge” as a result, he remained under the accommodation and hospitality of King Abdul Aziz for some months till he was appointed as a supervisor for teaching in the Prophet mosque. He remained in Al-Medina for two years and then he was transferred to the sacred mosque in Mecca and the Scientific Institute of Saudi in Mecca. He stayed there for a year.

After that he received letters from Indonesia and from India demanding from him to come and teach in their schools. So he preferred to accept the invitation of Shaikh Suleiman Al-Nadawi hoping that he would get the chance of studying in the university in India. So he became the head of the professors of Arabic literature in the college of scholars' symposium in the city of Lakanhu in India at which he remained for three years and learned the English language, but had never got the chance to study in the university. He emanated Ad-Diyaa magazine “The Magazine of Light” by the suggestion of Shaikh Suleiman An-Nadawi and with the help of his student Mas'ud Alim An-Nadawi. From there he returned back to Al-Basra and he stayed there for three years teaching in “An-Najati Al-Ahliyyah School” which was mentioned earlier. After that He traveled to Janif in Swiss and stayed with his friend Ameer Al-Bayan “the leader of clarification” Shakeeb Arsalan. He had wanted to study in one of the universities in Britain, but he had never got the chance to.

However, Ameer Shakeeb wrote a letter to one of his friends in the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs in which he stated “I have with me a literate Moroccan youth, the like of him has never entered Germany, and he is willing to study in one of the universities, I suggest you help him find a position to teach Arabic literature with a salary that will help him to study in the university”. It was not long until he received an admission letter, whereas he traveled to Germany as a lecturer in the University of Bowen. He then started to study German and had obtained a diploma after a year of studying the language. And then he became a student in that University even though he was teaching there. And within this period he had translated a lot from German and to German.

And after spending three years in Bowen, he moved to the University of Berlin as a student and a teacher and a director of the Arabic Radio. In 1940 he wrote his doctorate dissertation in which he refuted the false allegations of the Orientalists like “Martin Hartman and Carl Brakeman” And the topic of his doctorate essay was the “Interpretation of the Introduction to the book of the Republic from the Eessential Nature” with a commentary on it, there were ten scholars who were examining him at the seminar and all of them had agreed upon giving him a doctorate certificate in Arabic literature. During the Second World War, the Shaikh traveled to Maghrib. And in the year 1947 A.D., he traveled to Iraq and carried out teaching in the collage of “Queen Alyaa” in Baghdad till the occurrence of the militant revolution in Iraq. Due to that, he left to Maghrib, his motherland, in the year 1959 A.D. and started his call to singling out Allâh alone in worship and abstaining from polytheism and to following the methodology of the best generation ever. And in that same year, he was appointed as a professor in the University of Muhammad the Fifth in Rabat and its branch at Fas.

In the year 1968 A.D. he received an invitation from the Prominent Shaikh Abdul Aziz Ibn Baz the Head of the Islâmic University in Al-Medina Al-Munawwarah in that era to work as a professor in the University and a Moroccan delegate to the University. However, Shaikh Al-Hilali has accepted the invitation and remained in Media working till the year 1974 A.D. whereof he left the university and returned back to the city of Miknas in Maghrib and dedicated his life in calling to Allâh the Most High. He started to give classes in the mosques and travel all over Morocco spreading the methodology of the pious predecessors.

He was one of those who used to write articles in Al-Fat'h magazine which is owned by Muhibbu Ad-Deen Al-Khateeb and Al-Manar magazine which is owned by Muhammad Rasheed Rida may Allâh have mercy on all of them

His Death:
On Monday 25 Shawwal 1407 A.H. equivalent to 22 June 1987 A.D. the Islâmic Ummah is tested with a big catastrophe which is hard upon the pen to describe; it is the catastrophe of the death of the Shaikh Taqiyyu Ad-Deen Al-Hilali may Allâh have mercy on him and this happened in his house in the city of Daar Al-Baeda in Morocco. A big crowd accompanied his funeral including the scholars, the intellects and the politicians who were leading the funeral.

Book Reviews: 501 Arabic Verbs and Intermediate Arabic for Dummies

So I was at the El Paso Public Library with the kids checking out books when I came across these two books. I won’t add all of the information as you can Google both titles and find them online if you want to order them.

Barron’s had announced the release of their long anticipated 501 Arabic Verbs. When I saw it I had totally forgotten about it. You can find my review on the 201 Arabic Verbs in the archives, InshaAllah. I had read some negative reviews about this book but to be honest this is a pretty impressive reference work. I also like the fact that there are example sentences that show you how the word is used. The previous book left you guessing.

Intermediate Arabic for Dummies is not bad either but I think it is for those trying to learn Arabic grammar via the English medium. The author did a good job in explaining the intricate parts of grammar in laymen’s terms. I do not like the fact that the Arabic grammatical terms are transliterated by it is still a nice reference work for those still learning the language.

Allaah has ordained for the daughters of Aadam a monthly cycle of natural bleeding which brings about with it a set of rulings pertaining to the manner in which they are to worship Allaah, Glory be to Him, during the period of time this bleeding occurs.

I just ordered this book from Rimarket.com and received it last Friday. I read it in one sitting on Saturday. This is based off of a lecture that Dr. Saalih gave. It was transcribed into book form and made as a series entitled Silsalat-ul-Muhaadharaat-il-‘Ilmiyyah as book number 5. There is a foreword by the brother who transcribed it and Dr. Saalih’s permission for the lecture to be published as a booklet. The lecture itself consists of the Doctor’s introduction in which he goes into some preparatory matters before going into the topic. Then he goes into the linguistic and technical meaning of Naseehah. Then he goes into the difference between Naseehah and Tajreeh. Then he ends the lecture with the six categories of Tajreeh along with their explanation. A list of questions and answers is given at the end and then the booklet concludes with an index of the subjects. This is a very beneficial booklet to own and one that is a must for us to read. May Allah reward Dr. Saalih, the transcriber, the publishers, and all of those selling the book.

My dear brother Aboo Waheedah sent me two very beneficial books that I just completed reading. The first is a compilation on the excellence on the Qura’n and its companion. Each narration is accompanied with the Arabic text of the narration for those who want to memorize. The only thing is that the book is not numbered so it is hard to reference pages but the explanations and points of benefit come from Ibn Hajar, an-Nawawee, al-Albaanee, and other scholars. I particularly like brother Aboo Waheedah’s style of translation and the book is paperback making it easy to carry along.

The second book is a compilation of facts and narrations concerning the Mother of the Believers Umm ‘Abdillah ‘Aaishah bint Abee Bakr, may Allah be pleased with her. It was written in response to a negative book that was written about her. May Allah reward brother Aboo Waheedah for compiling this work. It will benefit the Muslim as well as the non-Muslim. Also all proceeds of this book will go to Muslim orphans in Mombasa, Kenya who lack the financial ability for an education. By purchasing this book you are helping a needy Muslim boy or girl, may Allah reward all those responsible for this great effort.

I received this book from brother Aboo ‘Abdillah, may Allah reward him. Very beneficial read from one of Dr. Rabee’s lectures covering the importance of Tawheed. The Muslim Ummah is in dire need of studying, knowing, and understanding this important topic. We live in a day and age where many Muslims do not give importance to Tawheed which is a right of Allah that every servant must know. It is the reason the Prophets were sent to their people.

How many times have we heard Muslims ignorantly claiming that Tawheed is not important or that explaining it only takes 10 minutes!? I ask all of you to read this lecture and contemplate the Doctor’s beneficial advice. At 36 pages you can read this within an hour and walk away with a better understanding of why we must learn Tawheed and how by not knowing it, it has caused the Ummah to split into various sects and groups.

This is an excellent treatise by the late Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaykh Bin Baaz (rahimahullah) covering the various Fiqh rulings of Purification, Prayer, and Fasting. The Shaykh starts with each topic and goes into a short synopsis of how the sick or handicapped person should perform their purification, prayer, and fast.

Then rulings presented by the people who are ill or handicapped are answered by the Shaykh. The book is small but filled with very important information. My dear brother Aboo ‘Abdillah (hafithahullah) sent me this wonderful book. By the grace of Allah al-Hujjah Publication has translated this book into English and they are currently working on publishing soon by the will of Allah.

I recommend this book because these are rulings that may affect you or someone you know. And since the children of Adam are prone to sickness and possibly becoming handicapped these rulings are a must to know.

I ask Allah to have mercy on our Shaykh, our father Ibn Baaz and to grant him the highest place in Jannah for his efforts in spreading Islam with the correct understanding.

Book Review: ad-Du'aa min al-Kitaab was-Sunnah

This small pocket book contains two works that are taken from a bigger version. The first book is ad-Du’aa min-al-Kitaab was-Sunnah by Sa’eed bin ‘Alee bin Wahf al-Qahtaanee, author of the well known book Hisn-ul-Muslim. The second work is called al-‘Ilaaj bi-Ruqyaa min-al-Kitaab was-Sunnah. The first work covers the benefits of Du’aa and then goes into the manners of observing Du’aa and the causes for it to be answered. He gives twenty four manners and reasons. Then he mentions thirty eight times and places in which the Du’aa is likely to be answered. After this he brings various Du’aa of the Quraan and the various Du’aa of the Sunnah. Each Du’aa is mentioned with its source for reference and authenticity.

The second work is really detailed and covers the importance of seeking a cure for one’s illness by way of the Noble Quran and the Purified Sunnah. The first section covers the cure for one afflicted with magic. The second covers the cure for the evil eye. The third covers the sure for one afflicted by the Jinn. After that the author goes into curing one’s soul in addition to many other illnesses of the heart such as stress, worry, sadness, grief, anger, anxiety, insomnia, and treatment by way of black seed, honey, and Zamzam water. He then finishes with how one cures the illness of the heart.

The style that the author uses is simple yet clear for the beginner of Arabic. The texts are also vocalized so you know who to pronounce each word correctly. This is a nice book, one easy to carry with you to memorize the Du’aa after prayer or just to open up when waiting in line somewhere.

The following is an excellent collection of prophetic narrations concerning the prohibition of racism in Islaam compiled by the late Shaykh ‘Abdus-Salaam bin Birjas bin ‘Abdil-Kareem (rahimahullah) with a foreword by ash-Shaykh Saalih Fawzaan al-Fawzaan (hafithahullah) a member of the Permanent Committee of Scholars in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. I received this copy from my brother Aboo ‘Abdillah of al-Hujjah may Allah bless him.

The Shaykh presents twenty two narrations dealing with al-‘Unsuriyyah (Racism) and al-Qawmiyyah (Nationalism/Tribalism). He presents each narration with the full Harakaat and its source (Bukhaaree, Muslim, etc). If the narration presents difficult words or phrases the Shaykh explains them. He also brings some statements of the companions commenting on some of the narrations. The narrations are ideal for memorizing but the commentary may be a little harder to commit to memory and Allah knows best. This is a great reference book and an eye-opener regarding a topic many Muslims fall into even in this day and age. May Allah unite the Muslims and grant us Tawfeeq with our fellow Muslim brothers and sisters.

It has been several months since my last post but that was only due to not having a scanner. Al-Hamdullilah I have a new scanner and some new books that I want to post reviews on with the permission of Allah. To get the reviews back in to full swing I decided to touch on a book that is relevant to Muslims especially in the West.

This is a small treatise about 39 pages long printed as a small paperback pocket book. The author begins with an introduction stating that the book was based off of a sermon he gave then he decided to add beneficial points and additional references. What you have before you is a very decent work that affects many Muslims today. After this introduction he reminds you about the oneness of Allah and about Tawheed. He goes into the holidays of the Christians and how they are connected to their religious beliefs. Then he goes into the Islamic holidays and defines them. He brings rulings on participating with the Christians in their holidays, greeting them using their holiday slogans, congratulating them, and giving them gifts. There is a lot of other information such as a ruling from the Permanent Committee of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia concerning this topic as well.

I believe this booklet probably came out in the late 80’s early 90’s but a lot of what I read still holds true today. Muslims in the West especially find themselves participating in the Christian holidays and most are not aware of its prohibition. Add to the fact that we have some Islamic personalities who encourage no even allow Muslims to partake in what Allah and His messenger have clearly made Haraam. We ask Allah Most High to grant us knowledge and wisdom and we ask Him to give us the opportunity to invite our Christian neighbors to the truth and light of Islaam. Indeed He is more than able to do that and He is the Wise.

Book Review: Talkhees Sifati Salaat-in-Nabee (Sallaa Allahu alayhi wa Sallam)

This is Shaykh Naasir-ud-Deen al-Albaane’s summarized version of Sifatu Salaat-in-Nabee. Many years ago I had this small treatise in English before I could read Arabic but I lost it unfortunately. I have looked everywhere for the translation but I have not found it. I decided that I will translate it and make it available as a free e-book with the assistance of Allah Most High.

This booklet is 32 pages with an introduction by Shaykh Naasir (rahimahullah) explaining his reason for the summarized version. He covers in brief each section of the prayer from the Takbeer to the Tasleem and even touches on the legislated manner of the Witr and the Qunoot.

This is a perfect reference work for teaching the prayers to children and new Muslims in a classroom setting. If you want to reference his sources then you must refer back to the original Sifatu Salaah.

Book Review: al-‘Aqeedah at-Tahaawiyyah Pocket Size

In my last book review covering the ‘Aqeedah Tahaawiyyah I forgot to mention the pocket size version I had. As you can see this is a small version of the text but it only has the Ta’leeq of Shaykh bin Baaz on it. The text is fully voweled although some words are not.

Book Review: al-‘Aqeedah at-Tahaawiyyah with Notes by al-‘Allaamah, ash-Shaykh Muhammad bin Maani’

This book contains a Haashiyah of al-‘Allamaah, ash-Shaykh Muhammad bin ‘Abdil-‘Azeez bin Maani’ (rahimahullah) with Ta’leeq by ash-Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez bin Baaz (rahimahullah) on the classical text al-‘Aqeedah at-Tahaawiyyah authored by al-Imaam, al-‘Allaamah, Aboo Ja’far Ahmad bin Muhammad bin Sallaamah at-Tahaawee, al-Azdee, al-Misree (rahimahullah).

This edition was printed by Adhwaa-us-Salaf in Riyaadh and supervised by Aboo Muhammad Ashraf bin ‘Abdil-Maqsood. It begins with an introduction by Aboo Muhammad and then gives a brief biography of ash-Shaykh Muhammad bin Maani’ and Shaykh Bin Baaz. The book then gives a very beneficial introduction by ash-Shaykh Muhammad where he explains the significance of this classical work and a brief bio about the author.

After this the text is presented along with ash-Shaykh Muhammad’s Haashiyah and ash-Shaykh Bin Baaz’s Ta’leeq. This book is not a Sharh which would be an explanation of the entire text. To clarify a Haashiyah is a note of benefit that is placed below a particular text that is commented upon. So Shaykh Muhammad added notes regarding certain sections that needed clarification or to provide a point of benefit. He always brings evidences from the Book, the Sunnah, and the statements of the scholars to these notes.

Shaykh Bin Baaz’s Ta’leeq is to further clarify any issues contained in the text so for example regarding al-Imaam at-Tahaawee’s statement about Imaan, then Shaykh Bin Baaz adds a note to clarify the issue.

The book also contains Haamish which is a side note writen to the left or the right of a text. It appears that the Hawaamish belong to Aboo Muhammad and are written in small bold type next to the Matn.

The book ends with a fairly decent index to look up the points. It is not a big book at around 84 pages you can complete it within a week or so. Although you may want to review the notes to ensure you grasped the points presented.

This is also a great book to accompany the Sharh written by al-‘Allaamah Ibn al-‘Izz (rahimahullah). I have included the link to the English translation for further reference. Salafi Publications also has a good translation of the text and some notes translated by Shaykh Fawzaan (hafithahullah) for those who want to further their side-by-side studies.

With tomorrow being the first day of Ramadan I wanted to link my previous reviews of several Islamic books perfect for the occasion. All of these titles are in Arabic and not translated to the best of my knowledge. I ask all of you that when you stand in Taraweeh prayer tonight that you remember me in your Duaas and ask Allah to guide me, forgive me, have mercy upon me and my family, and that He grant me knowledge, guidance, sustenance, righteous offspring, and a good ending. I will make Duaa for all of the Ummah and I pray that all of you have a blessed Ramadan filled with prayer, Duaa, reading of the Quran, reflecting upon it, and repenting to Him. Indeed Allah is the Oft-Forgiving, the Accepter of repentance.

Back home while I was living in El Paso, Texas in 1994 I used to pray Salaat-ul-Juma'aah at Ft. Bliss, an Army base that housed Masjid Salaah-uh-Deen. This masjid had been set up by the Emraatee and Kuwaitee government for thier soliders who were stationed in the states. I used to enjoy going there because it was like being overseas. You see many of the brothers were just learning English and Arabic was the main language. All I heard was Arabic from the Khutbah to the regular Duroos to the books in the Library, everything was in Arabic. This was a great advantage for me because it gave me the chance to listen and to practise. It was here that I began to learn some of the local Emraatee and Kuwaitee dialects. They had an Imaam and Khateeb named Shaykh Khaalid who lead the prayers and recited like al-'Efaasy. He was real strong in his Khutab and I used to learn a lot of vocabulary when he would speak, may Allah reward him.

At any rate occasionally Shaykh Khaalid would allow others to give the Khutbah but this one particular day after the prayer he introduced a brother that to this day left a lasting impression on me in terms of my conversion.

The first thing that I had noticed about this brother was that he was tall, he had extremely dark hair, and a very long beard. He spoke in Arabic about the importance of giving Da'wah to the Kuffaar here in America and how it was the responsibility of the brothers there to use thier time in the States to explain and invite to Islaam. He had a beautiful way of speaking and spoke with such conviction not like he was talking down on you but like he was giving Naseehah. He said that he had just printed a book in both English and Arabic called "Prophet Muhammad the Last Messenger in the Bible". After he finished speaking he went outside and began selling the books in English and in Arabic to the brothers. He must have sold out the Arabic cause when I got to him he only had English. When I gave him Salaams I asked him in my busted Arabic if he spoke English and he said he did. We began to speak briefly and I bought the English version of the book. He was a very kind brother and his manners made me feel comfortable around him.

I took the book home and read as much of it as I could. It was then that I learned the brother's name was Kais al-Kalby and he was originally from Iraq. He had founded a Da'wah Center in Utah and was giving Da'wah to the Mormons there, may Allah reward him with good.

In all of this time I have never been able to find the Arabic edition but I found it in a brother's library one day. I had meant to ask him if he would sell it to me but in the interim of eating dinner I totally forgot until it was too late. I think the Arabic is much better than the English and if you can find it for Arab Christians then please do so they need a lot of Da'wah. You will be amazed at how much they do not know or really understand about Islaam even though they live in the Muslim lands. I remember brother Wadih al-Hage (may Allah protect him and make things easy for him and his family) one day told me this when we were walking around Center Street Masjid in the late 90's. He used to be a Lebanese Christian until Allah guided him to Islaam wal-Hamdulillah.

The edition that I have is very old and has fallen apart from wear and tear. I will probably have to burn it because it is not staying binded wal-Allahu musta'aan.

I purchased this book with a set of grammar books that come in a series put out by Daar-ul-Kutub al-‘Ilmiyyah in Beirut, Lebanon. If you are into Arabic calligraphy and its history then you are really going to enjoy this one. Other Arabic calligraphy books that I have read focus on the discipline of writing and form but what makes this book unique is the fact that it draws from the whole history of how Arabic writing evolved. It draws its proofs from the Quraan, the Ahaadeeth, and the statements of the Salaf.

The author starts off with the history of Arabic writing and how it came about. He incorporates the relationship between writing and speech alongside calligraphy and grammar. He then brings a section that covers information regarding each Arabic letter and how the People of Knowledge differed in arranging them and teaching them.

Then he goes into the manners that the calligrapher should observe when writing and covers basic strokes and writing exercises. After this he divides the rest of the book into seven sections each covering the eight most popular styles of Arabic calligraphy:

There is some very beautiful and impressive calligraphy throughout the book along with the poem of Aboo ‘Abbaas ar-Rifa’aaee entitled: Natham li-Aalee as-Samt fee Hasan Taqweem Badee’-ul-Khatt which covers the proper manners of writing the Arabic letters and sentences.

This is a good read and highly enlightening even if you are not big on calligraphy it gives you a great sense of respect for the art. Most of the styles covered in this book appear in many titles of the ‘Ulamaa’s books that are published in the fancy scripts. After reading through it you will be able to better identify those styles contained within your book shelves, and Allah knows best.

by ash-Shaykh Ahmad bin Yahyaa an-Najmee (rahimahullah).

In memory of the noble ‘Alaamah I am posting this book review of his explanation to al-Usool-us-Sittah (The Six Principles) of Shaykh-ul-Islaam Muhammad bin ‘Abdil-Wahhaab (rahimahullah).

I purchased this binded copy from the brothers at Salafi Library.com may Allah bless them. They have a lot of good books and have been very prompt with my orders. This binded copy they sent me seems to be a version that was not ready for print as it has no publisher name or index.

The Shaykh (rahimahullah) uses a very simple manner of explanation that is good for many who have finished Madinah Book 3. The footnotes are a bit small but informative. I highly recommend you check his site to see if this is available for download or get a copy of the first printing.

May Allah have mercy on our Shaykh and may He grant him the highest place in the Jannah.

This is an excellent collection of narrations concerning the noble traits of the family of the prophetic household, written by the wife of the Muhaddith of Yemen, ash-Shaykh Muqbil bin Haadee (rahimahullah), Umm Shua’yb al-Waad’iyyah (hafithahaallah). The Shaykh had been married four times in his life, the first women he married he divorced and married his second wife Umm Abdir-Rahman who passed away in 1422/2/9 (rahimahaallah), the third was Umm Shua’yb and his fourth was Umm Salamah. She was married to him for close to ten years and studied intensely with him may Allah have mercy upon him.

The noble Shaykh supervised it while it was written and wrote an introduction to it when it was completed. He states, “Allah the Glorified and Most High has granted success with an abundance of good that has come from the women who seek beneficial knowledge, who act upon it, and who invite to the way of Allah. From them are teachers, authors of Islamic works, and callers to Allah calling based on insight. Allah has caused benefit by them. There is an excellent example in ‘Aaishah, Umm Salamah, Hafsah, and all of the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in addition to a large amount of women from amongst the companions and those who followed them such as Hafsah bin Seereen, ‘Umrah bint Abdir-Rahman, and Umm ad-Dardaa as-Sughraa. Much good has been spread because of them, may Allah be pleased with them. Indeed the women are sisters of men except for those whom the evidence specifies otherwise.”

Shaykh Muqbil mentions in his introduction that many books have been written concerning this topic however many have included both authentic and weak narrations. He says that what makes this book so unique is that it includes only authentic narrations concerning the prophetic household. Many of the Raafidhaah have written similar books however they contain many weak and fabricated narrations, having no basis or chains of narration.

This is an excellent work for our sisters to have even if you don’t read Arabic yet, with time and diligent study you can still have it for the time when you will be able to benefit from it, may Allah grant all of you the ability to read, write, and speak the language of the Quraan.

Everyone needs to get a hold of this short treatise covering the first portion of the Shahaadah: Laa Ilaha Illa Allah. Shaykh Yahyaa al-Hajooree (hafithahullah) gives a brief introduction to the book and gives it a high recommendation. The author then gives his Intro and presents 33 sections on the virtue and benefit of this statement which is one of the first pillars of Islaam. As Shaykh Yahyaa says:

“Indeed the statement Laa Ilaha Illa Allah is the first pillar from the pillars of Islaam. Many people today truly do not know its benefit. They are ignorant of its meanings nor do they concern themselves with understanding it or understanding and actualizing what it entails from the aspect of Tawheed in Allah’s Lordship, Oneness of Worship, and pertaining to His Names and Divine Attributes. Due to this The people of the Sunnah may Allah protect them give this statement the utmost attention in their sermons, lessons, and in their writings. From them is the noble brother Ahmad bin Sa’eed al-Ahjuree may Allah protect him.”

I have translated several sections of this book into English but I am not sure if anyone one is working on translating the entire book. It is indeed a gem so those who can read Arabic should do their best to own it.

You will notice the high degree of concern that the author had in including all of his references from the people of Knowledge although since some of the Ahaadeeth are lengthy I would have like to see them fully voweled due to some difficult words in some of the text.

This is a combined two volume compilation of legal Islamic rulings for Muslim women. It contains rulings from many of the major Scholars of Islaam such as ash-Shaykh Muhammad bin Ibraaheem Aali-Shaykh, ash-Shaykh ‘Abdur-Rahmaan as-Sa’dee, ash-Shaykh ‘Abdullah bin Humayd, ash-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, ash-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, ash-Shaykh ‘Abdullah bin Jibreen and ash-Shaykh Saalih al-Fawzaan. The book begins with an Introduction, how the book was compiled and the sources that the rulings were collected from. After this there are brief biographies of each Shaykh provided. Book one deals with ‘Aqeedah, Tahaarah, Salaah, Zakaah, Sawm, Hajj, the woman’s head covering, and woman’s beautification. This first part is 502 pages and contains hundreds of legal rulings for the Muslim woman.

The second volume deals with women’s issues and deals with rulings concerning the woman’s hair, shaking hands with a woman, seclusion and intermingling between a man and a woman, the rulings on marriage, rulings on divorce, Khula’, ath-Thahaar (making your wife impressible by saying you are like my mother or sister), the timeframe for a divorced woman, rulings on breast feeding, child support, rulings centered on spending on one’s children, guardianship, al-Ihdaad (the waiting time for a woman whose husband has passed away), rulings on inheritance, oaths and swearing, raising children, serving one’s parents, various rulings affiliated with the Muslim woman.

This is a very beneficial book with a lot of information that everyone can benefit from. The book is available in hardcover and makes for an excellent reference work.

Book Review: In Memory of Dr. Bakr Aboo Zayd and Dr.Saleh as-Saleh

With the recent passing of Dr. Bakr Aboo Zayd and Dr. Saleh as-Saleh (rahimahumaa Allah) I wanted to present two very beneficial books from these two people of Knowledge.

The first is Adab-ul-Haatif (the Islamic Manners of Using the Telephone). It is a short treatise only 38 pages long published by Daar-ul-‘Aasimah. I have had this book for a very long time after I heard brother Dawud Adeeb (hafithahullah) mention it many years back. I bought it from al-Basheer Book Publishing for like maybe $3.00. The Shaykh (rahimahullah) divides the book into many important sections. He explains the legislated manners the Muslim should observe when using the phone such as verifying the phone number before calling so not to bother someone else. The length one should remain on the phone so as to be considerate of one’s time. Answering the phone with the Salaams and not imitating the non-Muslims by using, “Hello”, etc. He even has a section dedicated to the women and how they should deal with using and answering the phone.

One important section for me was the manner in which how the one who seeks Fatwaa from the Mufti should act. Many of us neglect this when we contact the Scholars and Shaykh Aboo Zayd brings some benefits from the Book and the Sunnah regarding this issue. I was also extremely happy to read his presenting some English terms used by the Muslims today and a better equivalent for it in Arabic. For example many Muslims say “at-Talifoon” whereas he says its better to say al-Haatif (telephone) or al-Masarrah. Some Muslims say Faaks (fax) he says Raasil, etc.

No doubt this book will prove to be useful for the Muslims who read it and implement it while it shows the great insight that Dr. Aboo Zayd had when it came to issues affecting the Muslims. We ask Allah the Mighty & Majestic to have mercy upon him and to grant him the highest position in Paradise.

Who was Dr. Bakr Aboo Zayd?

The second book is from the noble Student of Knowledge Dr. Saleh as-Saleh (rahimahullah) in one of the best English translations concerning the issue of al-Qadr available today. While the book itself has been around for some time many new Muslims are beginning to study Islam and many want a better understanding of this very controversial topic.

I have had this book since it came out in 96 and it is still a constant reference work for me whenever I give Da’wah or teach my family. We ask Allah the Mighty & Majestic to have mercy upon Dr. Saleh as-Saleh and to grant him the highest position in Paradise.

Book Review: An Arabic-English Lexicon

About the lexicon:

The Arabic-English lexicon by Edward William Lane is a remarkable reference dictionary of the Arabic language for native speakers of the English language. It is widely recognized and used by many students who are learning Arabic and of whom Arabic is not their native language.

In my own personal experience I have found the lexicon to be more suitable for usage in translating from Arabic to English than with in-depth Arabic studies. What I mean by this is if I want to gain a better understanding of a particular Arabic word then I will refer to an Arabic dictionary as opposed to the lexicon. That is because in order to fully understand Arabic one must understand it by way of the language itself not by translation. The proof for this is in Mr. Lane’s own work. He used the Arabic dictionaries of the ‘Ulamaa of the language to compile his lexicon.

Don’t get me wrong the lexicon is very beneficial for the native English speaker as a reference work but if the lexicon had never been compiled the Arabic student could have still accessed the abundant Arabic works that were written and made available by the People of Knowledge. In the first volume the author cites all of the classical works and the names of the compilers that he used to base his lexicon off of. In fact his original plan for the lexicon was to translate the entire Taj-ul-‘Aroos into English but then he decided to sift through it and other works instead. In fact if you look at the format of his work and compare it with the dictionaries that he used you will find a striking resemblance.

One down side to the lexicon is that the author only completed the first five volumes of it. So from volumes six through eight it becomes very deficient in terms of detail. This leaves out a large portion of the meanings of the Mithaal (those Arabic words that begin with Waaw or Yaa). Despite this you will still find a decent compilation of words from these last few volumes.

About the author:

The author’s biography and the methodology that he used to compile this work are contained within the first portions of the lexicon itself. I found it very interesting to read about him because he spent close to thirty years working on this compilation.

I have come across several statements in various books implying that Mr. Lane embraced Islam. For example in Kais al-Kalby’s “Muhammad in the Bible” page 595 he wrote:

“A British Muslim, born in 1801 in Harvard, London. Lane studied the Language (Arabic) and culture of the Muslims…He became a Muslim in 1825 and married an Egyptian woman.”

Yet through admission of his own nephew Stanley Poole, Edward Lane never accepted Islam, he merely pretended to be Muslim so as to gain an in-depth knowledge of the Arabic language. He remained a devout Christian and Orientalist up until the day of his death.

This brings me to my final point regarding the author. When using this lexicon Muslim students of Arabic must keep in mind that the author was not from the People of Knowledge, not an Arabic grammarian in Nahw, Sarf, Balaaghah, Fiqh-ul-Lugah, or any of the other sciences of the Arabic language.

The lexicon is available in several formats:

An eight volume version that was printed in India. I currently own this copy and while I tend to enjoy bulky and large print due to my poor eyesight if you have to travel with this edition you are going to face some difficulties due to its size and weight.

A two volume version that has been condensed. This version is ideal for travel but still bulky. It also seems to be more costly than the eight volume version and I still cannot figure out the reason why. Shop around though you may be able to find it at a decent price somewhere.

A CD version of the lexicon for those who prefer referencing via computer. It is much lighter and is ideal for laptop use.

A free online version of the lexicon is available. You can download the entire eight volume version in PDF format. Be advised that it is slow and tends to be a hardship when sifting through each page. I tend to benefit from it when I am at work and I need to look up a word or two that I am not familiar with. Book Review: Just some stuff from off the shelf

In this review I wanted to present some books for those who have reached an intermediate level of Arabic reading. Back in Texas there is a used book outlet called Half Price books that buys books from the public and then turns around and sells them at half their price. Next to the Islamic bookstores this spot was my favorite place. I would rummage through the Arabic section and find books that Muslims had discarded and sold to this bookstore. I bought a large amount of Arabic books from this store. I found books by Shaykh al-Albaanee, Shaykh-ul-Islaam Muhammad bin ‘Abdil-Wahhaab, Muhammad ash-Shinqitee, you name it I would find it. One time I even found Subul-us-Salaam (the explanation of Buloogh-ul-Maraam) for half of what it sells on the Internet! When I got home and started to read to my dismay I found that it had belonged to a brother that I knew personally who had stopped seeking Knowledge, may Allah protect us from that. The way I knew this was because his name was on all four volumes of the book along with other books that I had purchased.

I also found a lot of Arabic children’s books and I became fond of reading them to develop vocabulary and to strengthen my reading skills. So I wanted to share just some of the many booklets that I have amassed.

This booklet focuses on teaching short Soorah’s of the Quraan along with lessons about respecting the parents, Paradise and Hellfire, and a host of other Islamic topics. It is a short book and looks photocopied. It was printed in Jordan and I believe was used in the educational system in the late 80’s.

This book (below) comes from Lebanon at a time when it dominated the scene in publishing Arabic books. It came out in the 70’s and centered around teaching Fushaa in an every day conversation setting. What makes it unique is that you learn Arabic by the pictures presented in each lesson.

If you notice the page I scanned you will see where it is teaching you how to say that you are closing your eyes and opening them, I am seeing you and you are seeing me, etc.

I taught some lessons from this book to some of my children and I found that they were picking up on how to think in Arabic and say simple things such as my hand is on my head, my finger is in my ear, etc. A lot of Arabic books today do not teach simple things like this.

When I first saw this book on the shelf two things went through my mind. One it is an extremely old and dirty book. I mean it is so dirty that your fingers are stained black from the print. Second I thought someone placed this book in the wrong section because it’s written in Urdu. I was right about my first thought but wrong about the second. It was a bilingual book teaching Arabic to Urdu speakers, but written in mostly Arabic.

As I went through the pages I immediately fell in love with the stories and sections contained in the lessons. It has a lot of vocabulary to learn and the type is very old but the style of Fushaa used is what makes it enjoyable. There is a good portion of poetry along with prophetic narrations and statements of the Salaf.

Now before you think I am strange for buying this next book I would like to share with you something I had read from the biography of Shaykh al-Albaanee’s life (rahimahullah). He once stated:

“The first books that I would read from were Arabic stories such as Thaahir wa ‘Antarah, al-Malik Sayf, and other works. Then the translated detective stories of Arsene Lupin and others like it, then I found a desire towards historical readings.”

So when I came across the Arabic translation of “Little House on the Prairie” out of curiosity I wanted to see how well I could understand it. I found that I understood a great deal of the story even though I had never read this book in English before. I was only familiar with the television program that aired when I was a young boy.

I will say that once you understand Arabic you will prefer to read many Arabic translations over their original sources. I have purchased other translated works and found that the beauty of the Arabic language captures far more in-depth meaning and makes more sense.

These are just some titles I wanted to share and I encourage all who are studying Arabic to read as much as you can. Do not just focus on the book you are learning from. Branch out into newspapers, magazines, pamphlets, books, etc. this will improve your reading skills tremendously.

Five: Regarding the words that errors are made in

Six: Regarding the prohibited forms of stopping and beginning

This is a must read for those who have studied the rulings of Tajweed. The style of writing is simplistic and is meant for the beginner as well as the intermediate reciter of the Quraan. I was extremely thrilled to read the section that explained the meanings of the various signs found in the Uthmani script of the Mushaf. The author’s incredible style of writing makes this one of those reference books that you will turn to over and over again.

Book Review: The Explanation of al-'Aqeedah al-Wasitiyyah

A couple of weeks ago I was in the Halal Mart here in Norcross buying some falafel mix and hummus to make for the family when I decided to look through some of the Arabic books in the book section of the store. Now mind you most of what they have is questionable but every now and then I will find some treasures of the ‘Ulamaa. It was one of those days. As I sifted through some dusty and filthy stacks I came across “Sharh-ul-‘Aqeedat-il-Waasitiyyah” by the late Egyptian Scholar ash-Shaykh Muhammad Khaleel Harraas (rahimahullah). While it was used, had a huge hole in it, and over priced (I left the price tag on the book when I scanned it) I couldn’t pass this beneficial book up. My wife (may Allah bless her) has the English translation of the book so when I found the original version I decided I would do a review on it after I read it.
Shaykh Muhammad Amaan al-Jaamee (rahimahullah) said regarding the noble Shaykh:

“Shaykh Muhammad Khaleel Harraas was a man from the ‘Ulamaa of al-Azhar. He was an Ash’aree Sufi Philosopher. When he wanted to present a treatise for either his masters or doctorate he was asked to write a book refuting Shaykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) but he wanted to refute philosophy. So he gathered the books of Ibn Taymiyyah to refute them and when he had begun to read them within three months the truth was clarified for him regarding ‘Aqeedah. He then recanted from the Ash’aree creed and began to adhere to Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah, believing in their correct creed. He then changed his treatise to “the ‘Aqeedah of Ibn Taymiyyah the Salafi” switching it from “the Refutation upon him”.

I scanned the portion that contains his bio and brother Aboo Maryam Isma’eel Alarcon (hafithahullah) has translated a more detailed biography of him.

This is Shaykh Harraas’s excellent explanation of Shaykh-ul-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah’s al-‘Aqeedah al-Waasitiyyah. The explanation seems to be more like notes printed as footnotes to the actual text. The style of language is simple but some of the poetry referenced is a bit advanced. This does not take from the Shaykh’s concise explanation of the issues noted by Shaykh-ul-Islaam.

The English version is decent but there are some omissions in some areas. It was printed by Daar-us-Salaam and reaches two hundred and twenty two pages. There is a nice Index, Publishers Note, Bio of Ibn Taymiyyah and of Shaykh Harraas in addition to the translation.

The Arabic version contains a short Introduction by ash-Shaykh ‘Abdur-Razzaaq al-‘Afeefee (rahimahullah) as well as Shaykh Harraas’ introduction which is not included in the English translation.

Book Review: Misquoting Jesus; The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why

Last month I was looking through the religion section at my local library when this book caught my eye. I think the title alone is what compelled me to check it out and read it. It was one of those books that you read from beginning to end. I finished it within a week and was totally taken aback by the facts presented within. Everything the author wrote had already been confirmed for me in the Quran when I read it almost fifteen years ago during a hot Texas summer weekend.

Just read what is quoted from within the jacket cover:

“When World-Class Biblical Scholar Bart Ehrman first began to study texts of the Bible in their original languages he was startled to discover the multitude of mistakes and intentional alterations that had been made by earlier translators. In Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman tells the story behind the mistakes and changes that ancient scribes made to the New Testament and shows the great impact they had upon the Bible we use today. He frames his account with personal reflections on how his study of the Greek manuscripts made him abandon his once ultraconservative views of the Bible.

Since the advent of the printing press and the accurate reproduction of texts, most people have assumed that when they read the New Testament they are reading an exact copy of Jesus’ words or Saint Paul’s writings. And yet, for almost fifteen hundred years these manuscripts were hand copied by scribes who were deeply influenced by the cultural, theological, and political disputes of their day. It seems that as Islam is spreading in the West, Christians are becoming more and more conscious of their beliefs and are asking questions that the Church and Biblical scholars cannot answer. And when they can answer many times the responses are in line with what was revealed to a humble Arab man from the Arabian peninsula named Muhammad (peace be upon him) approximately one thousand years ago. What Mr. Ehrman has written was already stated by Allah in His Noble Book when He said:

{And verily, among them is a party who distort the Book with their tongues as they read so that you may think that it is from the Book, but it is not from the Book, and they say: “This is from Allah,” but it is not from Allah; and they speak a lie against Allah while they know it.} Soorah Aali ‘Imraan: 78

I remember many years ago there was a Messianic Jew by the name of Zola Levitt (who by the mercy of Allah is now dead) who had a show where he had hosted the infamous Anish Shorosh (may Allah guide him or destroy him). For those of you who do not know this man he is a very evil evangelical Christian Arab devil who has devoted his life to attacking Islam and the Muslims. His antics are well known from his debates with the late Ahmad Deedat (may Allah have mercy upon him) to writing a Quranic version of the Bible called the Furqan. He alleges that he has answered the Quranic challenge to produce a book better than the Quran despite the fact that the majority of this fabricated book draws heavily from the linguistic and rhythmic style of Allah’s Book! (Anyone who is well grounded in the Arabic sciences will attest to this truth). At any rate Anish said on this show back in the mid-nineties that in 2000 the religion of Islam will cease to exist! And here we are in 2007 and Islam is still growing and more and more westerners are leaving Christianity and becoming Muslims. Why? Because people want to know the truth! How truthful are the words of our Lord who said in His Noble Book:

{And who does more wrong than the one who invents a lie against Allah, while he is being invited to Islam? And Allah does not guide a people who oppress. They intend to put out the light of Allah with their mouths. But Allah will bring His Light to perfection even though the disbelievers hate it. He is the One Who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to make it victorious over all other religions even though the polytheists hate it.} Soorat-us-Saff: 7 - 9

Perhaps the highlight of the book for me was the mention of the Johannine Comma which is used by many evangelical Christians to support the Trinity, in fact it is the only verse contained in the New Testament that mentions the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost theory. Mr. Ehrman goes on to explain how this verse in the New Testament is no where to be found in the original manuscripts of the Bible. I have scanned the pages for review for anyone who wants to read it. How beautiful are the words of our Lord who said in His Noble Book:

{Surely they have disbelieved who say: “Allah is the Messiah, son of Mary.” But the Messiah said: “O Children of Israel! Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Verily, whosoever sets up partners in worship with Allah, then Allah has forbidden the Paradise to him, and the Fire will be his abode. And for the polytheists there will be no helpers. Surely, the disbelievers are those who said: “Allah is the third of three.” But there is no god worthy of worship except for Allah.} Soorat-ul-Maa’idah: 72 - 73

I hope and pray that researchers such as Mr. Ehrman will open-mindedly look into the Quran and read the message that was revealed to the last of the Prophets and Messengers, Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

This is an excellent work by the noble Dr. ‘Abdullah bin ‘Abdil-Muhsin at-Turkee (hafithahullah) former director of the Islamic University of al-Imam Muhammad bin Sa’ood, and minister of Islamic Affairs who is currently the president of the Muslim World League. The author collects the statements of the Imams of the past such as Aboo Haneefah, Maalik, ash-Shaafi’ee, Ahmad bin Hanbal, al-Bukhaaree, Aboo Ja’far at-Tahaawee, Ibn Abee Zayd al-Qirawaanee, and Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon them all, regarding the true Islamic Creed. He brings their statements concerning the Speech of Allah, Imaan increasing and decreasing, and other issues the Muslims today have become ignorant of.

After mentioning their statements and presenting their evidences from the Book and the Sunnah, he then outlines the effects of Manhaj in upholding the correct belief, the knowledge based results in having the correct Manhaj, the true Jihaad in the path of spreading ‘Aqeedah and then the effects of the Jihad of Ibn Taymiyyah. This leads to the sections concerning the call of al-Imaam Muhammad bin ‘Abdil-Wahhaab (rahimahullah) in addition to the Creed he held.

He also explains the role of the Kingdom in spreading Tawheed and its efforts in disseminating the correct Islamic Knowledge. After this he has various sections covering the issues of Imaan, the sections of Tawheed, and the issue of Takfeer.

It is a very beneficial and enlightening book that deserves to be translated and conveyed to both the Muslims and non-Muslims since it educates one concerning the missionary work of both Ibn Taymiyyah and Muhammad bin ‘Abdil-Wahhaab. What makes me enjoy the book each time I read through it are the various statements of the Salaf that are contained within. It is truly a nice book to own and read.

I received this copy some time ago by my brother Aboo ‘Abdillah (hafithahullah) of Hujjah Publication in Brooklyn, New York, may Allah reward him. I have been going through it whenever I get a chance and while it is a bad habit of mine to read seven to ten books at one time, I really got deep into this one.

It chronicles the final years of the Hadeeth Scholar of Yemen ash-Shaykh Aboo ‘Abdir-Rahman Muqbil bin Haadee al-Waadi’ee (rahimahullah) from the time of his diagnosis with cancer to his travels throughout Yemen, Saudi, America, and other places.

The author Umm Salamah is one of Shaykh Muqbil’s wives and she really put together a very beneficial and tear-jerking account of this noble scholar. It is filled with poetry, newspaper readings, the Shaykh’s final will and testament, the Shaykh’s legal rulings, lectures he gave to his students while receiving treatment abroad, and accounts of his meeting with many prominent Muslim rulers and scholars while residing in Makkah.

It also contains his retraction of what he said against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a clarification to remove the doubts used by those who make Takfeer on the Ruler and its Scholars in that great country.

There is also an entire section of the two hundred and twenty legal rulings he gave while in America most of which were presented to him by Shaykh Fareed ‘Abdullah (hafithahullah) and the American Salafis who went to visit him during his treatment.

This is an amazing book and one that every seeker of Knowledge should have on his or her shelf. Please keep the Shaykh in your Du’aa’s and ask that Allah forgive him of his shortcomings and grant him the highest place in Paradise for his efforts in teaching the Book and the Sunnah.

This is an awesome book that I just bought a couple of weeks ago. I was expecting it to be bigger but the content more than made up for it. It contains 1,000 words used in the Arabic Media. The common contemporary media terminology found in this book is what makes it so unique. It has the definitions of words that are not usually found in other Arabic dictionaries. You will find the latest vocabulary such as “Axis of Evil”, “Neo-Nazism” to “Weapons of Mass Destruction” and “financial aid”.

The book is divided into eight sections; General, Politics, Elections, Military, Economics, Trade & Industry, Law & Order, and Disaster & Aid. The Arabic word is listed then its English equivalent. The Arabic vocabulary is also fully voweled so as to avoid any confusion in pronunciation. One word of notice: It contains only nouns, noun constructions and verbs. There is no reference to the particles unless they are attached to the verb.

The type is easy on the eyes and makes for a great reference book. You can keep up with the latest words used in Arabic media whether in newspapers or just surfing online. I bought this one used online for $5.00 and it was well worth it. Overall it is a book worth having to expand your vocabulary.

It is 138 pages and contains 24 sections on how the Prophet, peace be upon him observed his fast. Some sections include but not limited to; the Benefits of Fasting, the Benefit of the month of Ramadhaan, the Obligation to fast in Ramadhaan, a section on Suhoor, the Iftaar, those things that nullify the Fast, making up the days of fast that are missed, Laylat-ul-Qadr, I’tikaaf, Taraweeh, Zakaat-ul-Fitr and weak narrations that have been spread concerning Ramadhaan.

The fourth book in five books that I have been reviewing in the blessed month of Ramadhaan is the classic:

Qiyaamr-Ramadhaan Fadhluhu wa Kayfiyyatu-Adaaihi wa Mashroo’iyyat-ul-Jamaa’ati feehi wa ma’ahu Bahthun Qayyimun ‘an-il-‘Itikaaf

The Qiyaam (the Taraweeh Prayer) in Ramadhaan: Its Benefit, How it is to be performed, and the legislated affairs of the People of the Sunnah regarding it along with an insightful study concerning the I’tikaaf

Written by the Noble Hadeeth Scholar ash-Shaykh Muhammad Naasir-ud-Deen al-Albaanee (rahimahullah). It is a brief 46 page treatise covering the aforementioned topics. This edition was the third copy printed by al-Maktabah al-Islaamiyyah in ‘Amman, Jordan.

It was written after the Shaykh’s Salaat-ut-Taraaweeh and is the third treatise from a larger book that the Shaykh had written entitled Tasdeed-ul-Isaabah. Dr. Muhammad al-Jibaaly (hafithahullah) had translated sections from both this book that I am reviewing and Salaat-ut-Taraaweeh in his book regarding the topic, but to this date I do not think that the entire book has been translated and Allah knows best.

The Shaykh brings the evidence for praying eleven units of prayer in Taraweeh, detailing the chain of narrators and the grades of the narrations. He covers the reason why the Prophet, peace be upon him, did not continue leading the companions into group prayer, the appointing of an Imam specifically for the women, the time for the prayer, the manner in which he, peace be upon him, prayed (this section is excellent and has been translated by the brother of Salafi Publications), the manners of recitation, and then an explanation of the Witr, it’s Qunoot and what is said after performing it.

The last portion of the book contains the section on I’tikaaf, its rulings, conditions and what is permissible for the one making I’tikaaf to do, as well as the permissibility of women making I’tikaaf based on evidences and with the condition that there will not be any trial or seclusion of the women with the men. For the Arabic readers reference the last part of the book with Shaykh Muhamad ‘Abdil-Wahhaab al-‘Abdaalee’s Ieedhaah-ud-Dalaalah which is excellent within itself. For the English readers brother Isma’eel Alarcon (hafithahullah) has translated it on his excellent site al-Ibaanah so reference it.

I will end this month with the final book review for the month of Ramadhaan before the Eeed, inshaAllah.

This is the second in five books that I wanted to review briefly in this blessed month of Ramadhaan as I am very occupied with tending to my family’s needs in addition to increasing my acts of worship for Allah.

This second book is a personal favorite that I enjoy reading every Ramadhaan. That is because every time I read it, it is as if I missed a benefit from the last time that I read it. It is none other than:

Printed by the Charitable Organization of Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (rahimahullah) ran by one of the Shaykh’s sons, may Allah reward them for their efforts. It is listed as number 29 in a series of works put out by the noble Shaykh may Allah place light in his grave and shower it with His Mercy.

Majaalis is the plural form of Majlis and here the word is meant to denote the sittings that the Shaykh had during the blessed months of Ramadhaan where he would give beautiful and beneficial lectures to the students of Knowledge and the lay people. It is 232 pages of pure benefit and contains reference to all of the Quranic verses and prophetic narrations. Although some of the poetry that the Shaykh cites is not referenced. If you do not have this book then you need to get it before the Angel of Death comes. May Allah shower His vast Mercy on the noble Shaykh, and please remember to make Duaa for him and for his family in this blessed month.

Ramadhaan Book Review: Juzun feehi Ahaadeethu-Shahri-Ramadhaan

I pray that this blessed month of Ramadan has reached every single one of you in the best of health and in the highest of Imaan. It is a great opportunity for us to engage in perfecting as well as increasing our worship and good deeds.

With that said I wanted to share some good titles and beneficial works that I have read and continue to read in the sixteen Ramadan’s that I have been Muslim, and to Allah I give thanks and praise. The following are definitely not limited to all that is available in the Arabic language concerning Fasting however they are the few gems that I wanted to share with my Muslim brothers and sisters on this special occasion. From them are five books that I will present one by one with some basic information regarding each treatise throughout the rest of this blessed month.

جُزْءٌ فِيْهِ أحَادِيثُ شَهْرِ رَمَضَان فِي فَضْلِ صِيَامِهِ وَ قِيَامِهِ

“Juzun feehi Ahaadeethu-Shahri-Ramadhaan fee Fadhli-Siyaamihi wa Qiyaamihi”

{A Section containing the Prophetic Narrations of the Month of Ramadan, concerning the benefit of fasting and its enactment.}

This is an 89 page small booklet written by al-Imaam al-Haafith Abee Yumni Abdis-Samad bin ‘Asaakir (rahimahullah) concerning the narrations that deal with the benefits of fasting and the rewards earned by the one who carries out this beautiful act of ‘Ibaadah (worship).

While the treatise is very short and consists of 30 narrations the actual book is filled with very beneficial sections. It has been verified and checked by ash-Shaykh ‘Alee bin Hasan al-Halabee (hafithahullah), one of the students of Shaykh al-Albaanee (rahimahullah) and includes a biography of the author and some details as well as pictures of the hand written manuscripts that were used to produce the printed edition of this work.

The narrations are referenced with their sources and the verifier also included several indexes of the narrations, narrators, and the reference sources that he used.

This new publication from the Shaykh Rabee’ Ibn Haadee al-Madkhalee (May Allaah preserve him upon good), is an extraordinarily beneficial book. The Shaykh deals with the issue of the rights of men and women based on a seminar that was held by some women in Jedda, Saudi 'Arabia who claimed their rights were withheld. This publication is a refutation upon those who make this claim, as well as a description of the rights given to men and women in Islaam, the loftiness of women’s rights in Islaam over that of those in the West, and the women of other religions such as Christianity, Judaism, and Hinduism.

We hope that these comparisons will help the reader reflect upon the blessing that Allaah has truly given us. We found it shocking to see the degradation that women of disbelief endure from the deviant ones from both their homelands and religions. However, we have found that the degradation and exploitation of women of disbelief is in the roots of their belief systems, and societal practices.

This classical text has been recommended by the ‘Ulamaa to be memorized after Imam an-Nawawee’s Forty Hadeeth. It consists of five hundred and fourteen narrations taken from al-Bukhaaree & Muslim. The author said, “Some of my brothers asked me to summarize some of the prophetic narrations that contain rulings that are agreed upon by the two Imams: Aboo ‘Abdillah bin Isma’eel bin Ibraaheem al-Bukhaaree and Muslim bin al-Hajaaj bin Muslim al-Qushayree an-Nisaabooree, so I responded to their request hoping to cause benefit.”

There are nineteen chapters (Kitaab) in this collection and sixty six sections (Baab). This printing is small and hard on my eyes but is great to carry around since it is light and measures 6 ½ by 4 ½ inches. It contains a biography of the author, an explanation about the book and the scholar’s recommendation to study it, an explanation of the method in verifying the narrations, and glossary. The full name of the text is Matn ‘Umdat-il-Ahkaam Min Kalaam Khair-il-Anaam.

You can buy this book almost anywhere Arabic books are sold and usual sells for $7.00. It is a beneficial book to own and is necessary for the student of Knowledge to memorize and act upon.

The story about Revelation coming to the Messenger (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam), the call to Tawheed (Islamic Monotheism), the Prophet’s (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) reading of Soorah an-Najm in the presence of the Companions, the story of Aboo Taalib, the story of the Migration, and the story about the Apostasy after the Prophet’s (salla Allahu alayhi wa sallam) Death.

Shaykh-ul-Islaam explains these events in brief and touches upon their significance in the life of the Muslim. The actual text is about 31 pages along with the introduction and includes a nine page glossary of Islamic terminology.

I recommend this book for new Muslims as it is short and can be read in one sitting. I enjoyed reading this book once I received it, may Allah reward Aboo Dhikr for sending me a free copy for review.

This is a pocket-sized reference book covering the vocabulary of the Quran with an additional section covering the rulings of Tajweed. I couldn’t find a larger version of this book when I bought it at the bookstore in Dallas but it is a valuable reference book that I have benefited from whenever I translate verses of Allah’s Book on my own. I don’t like the fact that the type is small because my eye sight is poor, and to Allah I complain, however overall it is a book that I enjoy using. What I enjoy most is how the author defines the words in the Quran. I will give you an example in Soorat-ul-Baqarah you find the word:

لِّلْمُتَّقِيْنَ

“…For the Muttaqeen”

Which he defines as:

الَّذِيْنَ تَجَنَّبُوا المَعَاصِي وَ أدُّوا الفَرَائِض

“Those who abstain from disobedience and who perform the obligatory duties.”

Very simple, plain and to the point, the rest of the book is pretty much like this. I haven’t had a chance to read it from beginning to end but as I mentioned I rely on it a lot when I translate the verses of Allah’s Book in translations of the ‘Ulamaa. There are some difficult sections as far as the author’s explanation of certain words but most of how he defines these words are taken from the books of Tafseer. The Tajweed section is brief but covers the basic rulings that we should all know when reciting Allah’s book. May Allah reward the author and publishers for a beneficial book for those wanting to better understand the Book of Allah in the Arabic language.

This is a very decent book that is arranged in alphabetical order and fully conjugated. What this means is that the past and present tense as well as the command are conjugated based off of the he, she, we, they, etc forms. The author based the verbs used in this book on “The World List of the Arabic Daily Newspaper (Jerusalem, 1940). You do have to have a working knowledge of English grammar terminology in addition to a solid working knowledge of Arabic grammar to make the most of this book. I don’t think that every native English speaking person fully understand the words indicative, subjunctive, jussive used in the charts! If it were not for the fact that I understood Arabic grammar better than I do English grammar I would not have understood it either. Don’t get me wrong it is a good book to utilize and makes as a great reference. The price is economical and is very easy to find.

You can do a lot with this book like arranging the verb types in a folder or focusing on all the feminine forms in a spreadsheet, the suggestions are endless. I included an inside look of my copy so you can get a better look at the text ( I know it is crooked, I apologize!). I hope the rest of you will benefit from it like I did.
