Book Review: Tahdheeb al-Asmaa wal-Lughaat

Just received this two volume work by Imam an-Nawawee, rahimahullah, entitled Tahdheeb-ul-Asmaai wal-Lughaat. Each volume is about 600 to 500 pages each, printed by Daar-ul-Kutub al-‘Ilmiyyah in Lebanon, 1st edition for 2007. It is a very high quality book, with strong binding and good font size. I got this one from Fadak Books for only $20.00 which is a steal compared to what others charge. I could get it cheaper in Egypt or Saudi, but the shipping will be more. When I lived in Saudi, I didn’t see this copy there in the bookstores, so I seized the opportunity when I saw it online.

This work is a beautiful compilation written in encyclopedia style format, illustrating all of the qualities of the Prophet, peace be upon him. It then goes on to describe the names of his wives, children, uncles, etc. After this it then goes on to list the companions, the successors, and their students, along with the names of other prominent scholars from the Salaf. It also goes into the issue surrounding who is considered a companion, and who is considered a successor. Nicknames are also covered such as why Abu Lahab was given this nickname, and why he was called the Pharaoh of the Muslims. Imam an-Nawawee then completes the work with the meanings of various Arabic words of difficulty, which takes a portion of book two. This is arranged in order of the alphabet. I spent a good time reading about the origin and meaning of the word Aameen which is explained in a very brilliant manner.

I am very impressed with this work, and recommend it for those into reference works on both ‘Ilm ar-Rijaal and Fiqh-ul-Lughah. May Allah reward Imam an-Nawawee, enlighten his grave, and grant him the highest place in paradise.
